8 May
UK Forum for Haemoglobin Disorders Spring Meeting

Cavendish Conference Centre, 22 Duchess Mews, London W1G 9DT

Organiser: Dr Farrukh Shah, Consultant Haematologist, Whittington Health NHS Trust

The UK Forum on Haemoglobin Disorders is a multi-disciplinary group of healthcare professionals interested in all aspects of sickle cell disease, thalassaemia and related conditions. The group started meeting informally in London to discuss cases and clinical management challenges but became a national organisation in the early 1990s and now has a much wider membership and more formal status. The expansion of the Forum has mirrored the growing awareness of haemoglobinopathies as an increasingly prevalent group of disorders with impact across all ethnic groups. These disorders represent a major challenge to the broader health community particularly in inner city areas.

The UKFHD 48th Academic Meeting will focus on The Heart and Haemoglobinopathy Patients.

The day will include case presentations and interactive discussion on thalassaemia and sickle cell, as well as invited lectures covering:

  • Monitoring iron in the heart
  • Management of heart failure in thalassaemia
  • Emerging problems: atrial fibrillation
  • The heart in haemoglobinopathies
  • Monitoring the heart in sickle cell
  • Pulmonary hypertension in sickle cell disease
  • Surgical interventions in PHT
  • Intensivist’s approach to sickle cell patients
